				<title>RESUMEN</title>
				<p>Se estimó el rendimiento de materia seca y de sus componentes morfológicos y de algunos caracteres de las plantas de maíz en la Facultad de Agronomía y Veterinaria de la Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, a 22.23° LN y a 100.85° LO, a 1,835 m.s.n.m. en clima seco templado. Se utilizaron 26 genotipos de maíces, bajo riego en Primavera-Verano. La siembra se realizó en parcelas de 5 surcos de 0.90 cm de ancho x 5 metros de largo. Se depositó una semilla cada 12 cm a una profundidad de 7 cm. Se fertilizó con 160-40-00 (N-P-K). Se marcaron 10 plantas al azar en cada parcela. La cosecha se realizó en elote a <italic>Vi</italic> de la línea de leche. Se midió el rendimiento de materia seca (RMS), de planta (RMSP), elote (RMSE), relación Elote:Planta completa (RELPC) y Planta:Planta completa (RPPC), Número de hojas por planta (NHOJAS), y de elote (NELOTES), Altura de planta (AP), Diámetro de tallo (DT). El mejor RMSP lo mostró OjitalCT (17.81 ha<sup>-1</sup>) y Tampiqueñol (17.01 ha<sup>-1</sup>). TlanchiHgoA2 mostró el mayor valor de RMSE (12.71 ha<sup>-1</sup>) y para RMS (28.6 t ha-<sup>1</sup>), lo que hace que estos genotipos sean viables para zonas semiáridas.</p>

			<title>INTRODUCCIÓN</title>
			<p>La producción de maíz forrajero en México es de gran importancia, debido a que representa una fuente de alimento energética básica e importante para la producción creciente de ganado lechero, y se estima, que de 2010 a 2018 pasó de 2,374,623 a 2,529,672 cabezas, lo que representa un incremento de 155,049 cabezas (6.5%); Jalisco (14%), Durango (11.8%), Chihuahua (11.4%), Coahuila (9.5%), Guanajuato (7.8%), Hidalgo (7.8%), Puebla (7.0%), Querétaro (4.6%) y México (4.1%) (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">SIAP, 2020a</xref>). Aspecto que hace importante la búsqueda de alternativas de alimentación de calidad y de menor precio, para abaratar los costos de alimentación y hacer más rentable la industria lechera; ya que en las cuencas lecheras de México, el ensilado de maíz se utiliza comúnmente en la alimentación del ganado lechero, y llega a constituir del 30 al 40% de la ración en base seca en vacas en producción (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">González 2005</xref>).</p>
			<p>Dentro de los forrajes que más se consumen y producen en la comarca lagunera, región lechera, es el maíz; siendo el segundo cultivo de importancia, después de la alfalfa (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">González-Salas <italic>et al.,</italic> 2018</xref>). Por otro lado, el constante crecimiento del número de cabezas de ganado en la comarca lagunera, demanda el aumento en la producción de maíz forrajero y plantea la necesidad de identificar materiales con buenas características forrajeras, por lo que entre los criterios de selección para identificar híbridos adecuados, está el que presenten alto rendimiento de grano, productividad y alta calidad de forraje (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Sánchez <italic>et al.,</italic> 2011</xref>).</p>
			<p>Por otro lado, la producción de maíz forrajero en México ha tenido pocos avances, ya que la industria semillera no ha puesto a disponibilidad de los productores una amplia diversidad de variedades de maíz forrajero, que muestren mayor potencial productivo para mejorar los rendimientos de forraje verde para ensilar. Se tienen datos que la superficie sembrada en México para 2018 fue de 603,326 ha., con un rendimiento promedio de 29 ton/ha de forraje verde; y para el año de 2010 se tuvo una superficie sembrada de 535,621 ha., con un rendimiento promedio de 24 ton/ha de forraje verde (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">SIAP, 2020b</xref>); lo que demuestra que se ha tenido un incremento de 67,705 ha. (12.6%), pero el rendimiento aún es bajo, a pesar de haber tenido un aumento de 5 ton/ha (20.8%). El cultivo de maíz para ensilado en México presenta bajo rendimiento de materia seca por hectárea, bajo contenido de grano y alto de fibra, lo que ocasiona que la digestibilidad y energía del forraje sean bajas. Esta situación se debe en parte al uso de híbridos considerados como forrajeros, de elevada altura y gran capacidad para producir forraje, pero con pobre valor nutritivo; ya que por lo general esos genotipos se siembran a altas densidades de población, lo que ocasiona una escasa cantidad de grano (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Núñez <italic>et al.,</italic>2005</xref>); además de que su formación no fue para maíces forrajeros (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Peña <italic>et al.,</italic> 2004</xref>).</p>
			<p>En la búsqueda de mejorar los rendimientos y calidad del maíz forrajero, se han realizado diversos estudios para evaluar diversas variedades mejoradas y criollos de algunas regiones, con el fin de dar alternativas para mejorar los rendimientos y ofrecer genotipos de maíz que ofrezcan mayor rentabilidad y calidad forrajera. Entre ellos, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Zaragoza-Esparza <italic>et al.</italic> (2019)</xref> evaluaron 12 genotipos en Valles Altos, y observaron que los mayores rendimientos de materia seca fueron para los híbridos Búho, 501 x 497, 504 x 408, Puma 1163, H-48, 501 x 555 y 501 x 410 con 26.4, 25.6, 25.5, 25.4, 24.7, 24.7 y 24.3 t ha<sup>-1</sup> de materia seca, respectivamente; y 74.0, 64.1, 68.8, 75.0, 69.4, 65.8 y 65.8 ton/ha de forraje verde, respectivamente.</p>
			<p>La altura de planta de los genotipos estudiados fue variable, y mayor para Puma 1167, Puma 1163, H-48, 504 x 408 y H-51 AE con 2.4, 2.3, 2.2, 2.2 y 2.2 m, respectivamente. Lo que pone de manifiesto que existen en el mercado variedades alternativas para los productores que no pueden acceder a las variedades ofrecidas en el mercado por empresas internacionales. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Sánchez <italic>et al.</italic> (2019)</xref> evaluaron seis híbridos comerciales en una región tropical, y observaron diferencias entre genotipos y que la altura varió de 203.1 a 167.2 cm. El número de hojas fue de 10.7 a 9.6 hojas planta<sup>-1</sup>, el número de elotes planta<sup>-1</sup> de 1.26 a 1.0, el diámetro de tallo 5.7 a 4.8 cm, el Peso de hojas planta<sup>1</sup> fue entre 162.3 a 122.9 g; el peso detallo estuvo entre 130.8 a 81.4, rendimiento de forraje de 38.8 a 30.7 ton ha<sup>-1</sup>. Al igual la densidad de población influyó en el rendimiento, ya que a una densidad mayor y que fue de 83,333 plantas ha<sup>-1</sup>., mostró el mayor rendimiento de forraje con 41.8 ton ha<sup>-1</sup>.</p>
			<p>Otro estudio en maíces trilineales evaluados en una región tropical seca por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic> (2018)</xref>, observaron variabilidad en los parámetros estudiados, y los mejores genotipos mostraron RMS de 32.8 a 27.6 t ha<sup>-1</sup>, para hoja de 5.7 a 5.01 ha<sup>-1</sup>, para tallo 19.1 a 13.6 t ha<sup>-1</sup>, para elote 8.9 a 8.5 t ha<sup>-1</sup>; y el porcentaje de los componentes morfológicos fue para hoja de 16 a 22 %, elote 26 a 35 % y tallo 43 a 58 %; aspectos que van a influir en el rendimiento total de la materia seca de los genotipos y de su calidad.</p>
			<p>Por lo que el objetivo del presente estudio fue estimar el rendimiento de materia seca, componentes morfológicos y algunos caracteres de las plantas de 26 genotipos de maíz, originarios de regiones subtropical y tropical, bajo condiciones de un clima climática seco.</p>
		</sec>
		<sec sec-type="materials|methods">
			<title>MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS</title>
			<sec>
				<title>Localización</title>
				<p>La investigación se realizó en la Facultad de Agronomía y Veterinaria de la Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, ubicada en el Ejido Palma de la Cruz, municipio de Soledad de Graciano Sánchez, S. L. P., en el Km. 14.5 de la Carretera San Luis Potosí-Matehuala, que se ubica a 22° 13' 39.8” de Latitud Norte y a 100° 50' 58.3” de Longitud Oeste, a 1,835 m.s.n.m. El clima es seco templado; con temperatura media anual de 17.1 °C. La precipitación pluvial es de 362 mm (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">García, 2004</xref>).</p>
			</sec>
			<sec>
				<title>Material genético y tratamientos</title>
				<p>Se utilizaron 23 genotipos de maíces locales, colectados en regiones subtropicales y tropicales de México (Nayarit, Veracruz e Hidalgo), dos genotipos locales y uno mejorado de la región semiárida en estudio, para compararlos; los cuales funcionaron como tratamientos (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t1">cuadro 1</xref>).</p>

				<title>Procedimiento</title>
				<p>Se realizó un experimento con 26 genotipos de maíz, bajo condiciones de riego en el ciclo primavera-verano, para definir su productividad, bajo el siguiente esquema:</p>
				<p>La siembra se realizó en el mes de abril. Se trazaron parcelas de 5 surcos de 0.90 cm de ancho x 5 metros de largo, y se depositó una semilla por golpe cada 12 cm, a una profundidad de 7 cm en forma manual (92,463 semillas/ha). La fertilización se realizó con una dosis de 160-40-00 (N-P-K), aplicando todo el fósforo (P), y la tercera parte del nitrógeno (N) al cultivo a la siembra y las otras dos terceras partes del N; una se aplicó al mes y la otra parte dos meses después de la siembra, respectivamente. El control de malezas se hizo con herbicidas pos-emergentes (Gesaprin ®) con una bomba aspersora de mochila manual, 25 días después de la siembra (DDS), una vez que las plántulas de maíz habían emergido (12 a 15 cm); y una segunda a los 40 días después, con el mismo producto y de la misma manera.</p>
				<p>El riego fue por gravedad, y se aplicó en promedio cada 21 días después de la emergencia, con una lámina aproximada de 10 mm, y hasta cuando el elote estuvo en el estado de ½ de la línea de leche. Se marcaron 10 plantas para cada parcela en competencia completa al azar, y se identificaron con una etiqueta para medir las variables evaluadas.</p>
				<p>La cosecha se realizó a los 120 a 135 DDS, según como fueron llegando los elotes al de la línea de leche de cada respectivo genotipo; para ello las plantas marcadas se cosecharon al ras del suelo, se pesaron con una balanza manual colgante de 20 kg (GAMO®), con una aproximación de 0.5 kg. Para después separar los componentes, tallo+hoja y elote que se pesaron en forma individual, en una báscula digital (TORREY® Modelo EQ-5/10), con una capacidad de 5 kg y una aproximación de 1 g. Cada componente fue triturado y molido en un molino de forraje verde con cuchillas y martillos (NOGUERA®). Se tomó una muestra del material molido de 200 g para cada componente, y se depositaron en bolsas de papel estraza, previamente identificadas por genotipo y repetición; las cuales fueron llevadas a una estufa de aire forzado para secarlas durante 120 h a 55°C. Una vez secas se pesaron en una balanza digital marca Ohaus, con capacidad de 300 g y una aproximación de 0.1 g, y se determinó el porcentaje de MS. El porcentaje de MS de cada muestra y de cada componente se multiplicó a la materia verde, calculada por hectárea a partir de las 10 plantas muestreadas.</p>
			</sec>
			<sec>
				<title>Variables estudiadas</title>
				<p>De diez plantas en competencia completa cosechadas en verde, una vez pesadas y registradas en la bitácora, se separaron en dos componentes elote y planta completa (tallos + hojas); los elotes y la planta completa se pesaron en verde en una balanza Marca TORREY®, Modelo EQ-5/10, con una capacidad de 5 kg y una aproximación de 1 g. Se picaron en forma separada en una trituradora de forraje de martillos con navajas, y se tomó una muestra de 200 g que se colocaron en una bolsa de papel estraza, la cual se llevó a una estufa de secado de aire forzado, para determinar la MS; luego se pesó en una balanza CS200 (Ohaus®), con una aproximación a 0.1 g, de tal forma que se obtuvieron dos variables de componentes:</p>
				<p>Rendimiento de materia seca de planta completa (tallo + hoja) (RMSP).</p>
				<p>Rendimiento de materia seca de elote (RMSE).</p>
				<p>Rendimiento de materia seca (RMS), se obtuvo sumando los dos componentes planta y elote.</p>
				<p>Relación elote: planta completa (RELPC). Se obtuvo dividiendo el rendimiento de la MS del elote, entre el rendimiento de la MS de la planta completa (Elotes, Tallo + Hojas). Relación planta: planta completa (RPPC). El rendimiento de la MS del tallo + hoja se dividió entre el rendimiento de MS de la planta completa.</p>
				<p>Número de hojas por planta (NHOJAS). Se contó el número de hojas por cada planta, dato que se registró en forma individual para las 10 plantas con competencia completa tomadas al azar, de la unidad experimental.</p>
				<p>Número de elotes por planta (NELOTES). Se contó el número de elotes en las 10 plantas seleccionadas al azar.</p>
				<p>Altura de planta (AP). Se midió con cinta métrica, desde la base del tallo a la base de inserción de la lámina de la hoja con la vaina de la última hoja, en las 10 plantas seleccionadas al azar</p>
				<p>Diámetro de tallo (DT). Se midió en el entrenudo inferior con un vernier manual a las diez plantas seleccionadas al azar.</p>
			</sec>
			<sec>
				<title>Diseño Experimental</title>
				<p>El diseño experimental fue completamente al azar, con seis repeticiones para RMS y 10 repeticiones para NHOJAS, NELOTES, AP y DT; donde la parcela experimental fue de 5 surcos de 0.90 m de ancho y 5 m de largo.</p>
				<p>Los datos obtenidos se analizaron mediante el paquete estadístico <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">SAS® Versión 9.3</xref> y se realizó la prueba de Tukey P&lt;0.05 para la comparación de medias (SAS, 2011).</p>
			</sec>
		</sec>
		<sec sec-type="results|discussion">
			<title>RESULTADOS Y DISCUSIÓN</title>
			<sec>
			<title>Rendimiento de materia seca de planta</title>
			
			<p>RMSP mostró significancia (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t2">cuadro 2</xref>), donde OjitalCT y Tampiqueñol mostraron los mayores valores con 17.8 y 17.0 t MSP ha<sup>-1</sup>, a las que les siguieron los genotipos TlanchiHgo2, PapantlalntrJala, TlanchiHgoA7 y AS948-2 con 15.7, 14.6, 14.6 y 14.0 t MSP ha<sup>-1</sup>, respectivamente. El genotipo con menor valor fue TlanchiHgoA3 con 3.41 MSP ha<sup>-1</sup>. Valores mayores a los de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Elizondo y Boschini (2002)</xref>, en maíces criollos y mejorados en un bosque húmedo montañoso, con valores de 11.3 y 7.4 t MSTH (MSP) ha<sup>-1</sup>, respectivamente. Para hoja de 5.7 a 5.0 t ha<sup>-1</sup> y para tallo 19.1 a 13.6 t ha<sup>-1</sup>. Valores menores a los observados por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic> (2018)</xref>, en maíces evaluados en trópico seco para hoja de 24.8 a 18.6 t ha<sup>-1</sup> de tallo+hojas (MSP). Similares a los obtenidos por<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Elizondo-Salazar (2011)</xref>, con 7.8 y 13.8 t de tallo+hojas (MSP) ha<sup>-1</sup> para maíz mejorado y criollo, respectivamente.</p>

				<title>Rendimiento de materia seca de elote</title>
				<p>RMSE mostró diferencias significativas (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t2">cuadro 2</xref>), donde los genotipos con los mayores valores fueron TlanchiHgoA2, con 12.71MSE ha<sup>-1</sup> y le siguió FeliUzeta, con 9.01 de MSE ha<sup>-1</sup>. El genotipo con el menor valor fue FcolMaJala con 1.2 t MSE ha<sup>-1</sup>. Valores semejantes a los obtenidos por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic> (2018)</xref> en híbridos trilineales evaluados en trópico seco de 8.9 a 8.5 t MSE ha<sup>-1</sup>, y menores a los obtenidos por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Elizondo y Boschini (2002)</xref> en maíces criollos y mejorados en un bosque húmedo montañoso, con valores de 10.7 y 15.3 t MS de elote ha<sup>-1</sup>, respectivamente; y a los de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Elizondo-Salazar (2011)</xref>, con 3.1 y 1.51 de MSEL ha<sup>-1</sup> para maíz mejorado y criollo, respectivamente. Lo que demuestra la alta productividad de los maíces tropicales, semitropicales y templados, en comparación a maíces de montaña. Además de observarse variabilidad de este componente entre los genotipos, que bien este carácter puede aprovecharse para futuro mejoramiento.</p>
			</sec>
			<sec>
				<title>Rendimiento de materia seca</title>
				<p>El RMS fue significativo entre genotipos (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t2">cuadro 2</xref>), donde el mayor valor lo obtuvo el genotipo TlanchiHgoA2, con 28.6 t MS ha<sup>-1</sup>; a la que le siguió el genotipo OjitalCT, con 25.51 de MS ha<sup>-1</sup>. El menor valor lo mostró el genotipo TlanchiHgoA3, con 8.1 t MS ha<sup>-1</sup>. Estos resultados son similares a los observados por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Zaragoza-Esparza (2019)</xref> de 26.4 a 24.3 t ha<sup>-1</sup> en maíces híbridos. Datos menores a los de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Parra (1996)</xref> para 23 genotipos de maíz criollo y dos variedades comerciales, con un rango de 18.13 a 33.9 t MS ha<sup>-1</sup> para 1991; a los de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic> (2011)</xref> para maíces trilineales, evaluados en Valles Altos con 47.2 a 34.31 MS ha<sup>-1</sup>, y a los de Rivas <italic>etal.</italic> (2018) para maíces trilineales evaluados en región subtropical, con resultados de 32.8 a 27.6 t MS ha<sup>-1</sup>; y menores a los obtenidos en 1992 en un rango de 54.1 a 23 t MS ha<sup>-1</sup> con una densidad de 62 mil plantas ha<sup>-1</sup>, y mayores a los observados por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Sánchez <italic>etal.</italic> (2011)</xref>, para maíz criollo, que mostró el mayor rendimiento con 44.2 t de materia verde ha<sup>-1</sup>; que si consideramos un porcentaje de materia seca de 35% por el estado en que se cosechó, tendríamos un rendimiento de 15.5 t MS ha<sup>-1</sup> bajo condiciones cálidas húmedas, y a los de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Elizondo y Boschini (2002)</xref> en maíces criollos con valores de 11.61 MS ha<sup>-1</sup>.</p>
			</sec>
			<sec>
				<title>Relación Planta: Planta Completa</title>
				<p>El RPPC mostró diferencias significativas (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t2">cuadro 2</xref>), donde el mayor valor lo obtuvo el genotipo FcolMaJal, con 0.91; a la que le siguieron PapIntrJalaAmc, con 0.80 y PapantlalntrJala, Tampiqueñol y Tampiqueño2, con 0.76 para los tres. Por otro lado,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic> (2018)</xref> observaron valores de hoja de 0.16 a 0.22 y tallo de 0.43 a 0.58, que sumando en total los dos componentes darían 0.59 a 0.80 de RPPC, un poco menor a lo observado en esta investigación. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic> (2011)</xref> observó otros valores para maíces trilineales, evaluados en Valles Altos con 0.77 a 0.55.</p>
			</sec>
			<sec>
				<title>Relación Elote: Planta Completa</title>
				<p>El RELPC mostró diferencia estadística entre genotipos (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t2">cuadro 2</xref>), donde TlanchiHgoA3 mostró el mayor valor con 0.61; seguido del genotipo Forrasierra, con 0.53; mientras que el menor valor lo obtuvo FcolMaJal ,con 0.10. Datos mayores a los observados por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Rivas<italic>et al.</italic> (2011)</xref> con valores para maíces trilineales evaluados en Valles Altos, con 0.45 a 0.23., y a los de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic> (2018)</xref> con elote 0.26 a 0.35. Este carácter es importante seleccionarlo en los maíces para forraje, porque una proporción superior al 54% de elotes puede asegurar una digestibilidad in vitro (DIV) mayor a 68% (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Peña <italic>et al.,</italic> 2004</xref>) y mostraron menos del 50% de FDN, por presentar un valor energético satisfactorio (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Núñez<italic>et al.,</italic> 2003</xref>).</p>
			</sec>
			<sec>
				<title>Altura</title>
				<p>Para la altura, los resultados mostraron diferencias significativas entre genotipos (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t3">cuadro 3</xref>), donde Tampiqueñol mostró el mayor valor con 241.8 cm, y le siguió el genotipo, PapantlalntrJala2 con 231.9 cm; en cambio el híbrido comercial Forrasierra mostró el menor valor con 135.8 cm. Los datos mostraron gran variabilidad en la altura de la planta. Estos resultados son semejantes a los encontrados por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Parra (1996)</xref>, quien observó para 23 genotipos de maíz criollo un rango de altura de 245 a 169 cm. en 1991, y 239 a 175 cm. en 1992; al igual que a los observados por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Sánchez (2011)</xref>, para maíz criollo con 244 y 216 cm de altura, de una región cálida húmeda; también a los de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Sánchez <italic>et al.</italic> (2013)</xref>, quienes obtuvieron alturas de 247 y 216 cm para un criollo y de 195 a 165 cm en híbridos comerciales, en una región tropical húmeda en dos experimentos. Esta altura es semejante ya que los criollos que mostraron una mayor altura en esta investigación provienen de regiones cálidas y semicálidas; al igual a los observados por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Zaragoza-Esparza <italic>etal.</italic> (2019)</xref>, con valores de 2.4, 2.3, 2.2, 2.2 y 2.2 m para los maíces de mayor porte en Valles Altos. Mayores a los observados por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Sánchez <italic>et al.</italic> (2019)</xref>, para maíces tropicales, con valores de 203.1 a 167.2 cm. Menores a los observados <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic>(2011)</xref>, quienes obtuvieron valores para maíces trilineales evaluados en Valles Altos de 284 a 201 cm; y a los de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic> (2018)</xref>, en maíces evaluados en trópico seco, con un rango de 264 a 195 cm; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Yescas <italic>et al.</italic> (2015)</xref>, con valores que van de 257 a 282 cm;<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Borroel <italic>et al.</italic> (2014)</xref>, con 243 a 221 cm; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Montemayor <italic>et al.</italic> (2006)</xref> con rango de 172 a 156 cm y <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Rivas <italic>etal.</italic> (2006)</xref> de 255 a 159 cm.</p>

				<title>Diámetro de tallo</title>
				<p>El Diámetro de tallo mostró significancia estadística (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t3">cuadro 3</xref>), donde el genotipo RazaJala mostró el mayor valor con 2.96 cm, a la que le siguió AS948-2 con 2.87 cm; en tanto que el híbrido comercial Forrasierra mostró el menor valor con 2.14 cm. De tal forma que se observó una gran variabilidad entre genotipos para el DT, siendo un carácter que puede utilizarse para selección y mejoramiento genético. Datos mayores a los observados por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Parra (1996)</xref> para 23 genotipos de maíz criollo, en un rango de 2.01 a 1.28 cm en 1991 y de 1.93 a 1.36 cm en 1992; y semejantes a los observados por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Rivas<italic>et al.</italic> (2011)</xref> para maíces trilineales evaluados en Valles Altos con 2.71 a 2.30 cm.</p>
			</sec>
			<sec>
				<title>Número de hojas</title>
				<p>NHOJAS mostró diferencias significativas (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t2">cuadro 2</xref>), donde el genotipo con mayor valor fue RazaJala con 19.0 hojas planta<sup>1</sup>, a la que le siguió BVPbaja con 18.0 hojas planta<sup>1</sup>; mientras que el híbrido comercial Forrasierra presentó el menor valor con 12.4 hojas planta<sup>1</sup>. Valores similares a los de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>etal.</italic> (2018)</xref> con 17.0 a 14.2 en maíces trilineales evaluados en trópico seco. Datos mayores a los obtenidos por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Parra (1996)</xref> en 21 criollos, al obtener un rango de 16.4 a 14.5 hojas por planta, y muchos mayores a los de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Sánchez<italic>et al.</italic> (2019)</xref> con valores de 10.7 a 9.6 hojas planta<sup>1</sup>, y similares a los de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic>(2011)</xref> maíces trilineales evaluados en Valles Altos con 14.9 a 12.5. Este carácter es importante seleccionarlo en los maíces porque es uno de los componentes que le confieren mayor valor nutritivo a los genotipos, por ser de mayor digestibilidad (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Paliwal, 2001</xref>).</p>
			</sec>
		</sec>
		<sec sec-type="conclusions">
			<title>CONCLUSIÓN</title>
			<p>Con respecto al número de hojas, los genotipos RazaJala, BVPbaja y AS948-2 con valores que van en un rango de 19 a 17.8 hojas, mostraron los valores más altos, lo que los hace recomendables para seleccionarlos o recomendarlos por este rango considerable. En cuanto rendimiento de materia seca total, los mejores genotipos fueron TlanchiHgoA2 y OjitalCT, demostrando características productivas que pueden ser tomadas en cuenta para la producción de materia seca. Para el rendimiento de materia seca planta (tallo + hoja), OjitalCT y Tampiqueñol demostraron tener el mayor valor, lo que hace que estos genotipos sean viables para producción de materia seca en tallo y hoja; asimismo para un buen rendimiento. De acuerdo a la evaluación, se observó que existen genotipos de región subtropical y tropical, que muestran un comportamiento productivo satisfactorio y mejor que otros locales e híbridos mejorados en regiones semiáridas, como el Tampiqueñol, OjitalCT y TlanchiHgoA2; por lo que podrían recomendarse para ser evaluados más ampliamente a nivel comercial para ser utilizados como alternativas de maíz forrajeros, o considerarlos en programas de mejoramiento para fines forrajeros.</p>

				<article-title>Productive response of subtropical and tropical corns for forage purposes in a semi-arid region</article-title>

				<title>ABSTRACT</title>
				<p>The yield of dry matter, its morphological components, and some characters of the corn plants in the Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí, at 22.23 ° LN and at 100.85 ° LO, at 1,835 m a.s.l. in mild dry weather. 26 corn genotypes were used, under irrigation in Spring-Summer. The sowing was carried out in plots of 5 rows of 0.90 cm wide x 5 meters long. A seed was deposited every 12 cm at a depth of 7 cm. It was fertilized with 160-40-00 (N-P-K). Ten plants were randomly marked on each plot. The harvest was done in corn at ½ of the milk line. 10 plants were randomly marked on each plot. The harvest was done in corn at % of the milk line. The yield of dry matter (YDM), plant (YDMP), corn (YDMC), corn: complete plant (RCCP) ratio and plant: complete plant (RPCP) ratio, Number of leaves per plant (NLEAVES), and of corn (NCORN), Plant height (PH), Stem diameter (SD). The best YDMP was shown by OjitalCT (17.8 t ha<sup>-1</sup>) and Tampiqueñol (17.0 t ha<sup>-1</sup>). TlanchiHgoA2 showed the highest value of YMDC (12.7 t ha<sup>-1</sup>) and for YDM (28.6 t ha<sup>-1</sup>), which makes these genotypes viable for semi-arid areas.</p>

				<title>INTRODUCTION</title>
				<p>Forage corn production in Mexico is of great importance, because it represents a basic and important energy food source for the growing production of dairy cattle, and it is estimated that from 2010 to 2018 it went from 2,374,623 to 2,529,672 heads, which represents an increase of 155,049 heads (6.5%); Jalisco (14%), Durango (11.8%), Chihuahua (11.4%), Coahuila (9.5%), Guanajuato (7.8%), Hidalgo (7.8%), Puebla (7.0%), Querétaro (4.6%) and Mexico ( 4.1%) (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">SIAP, 2020a</xref>). An aspect that makes the search for quality and lower-cost feeding alternatives important, to reduce feeding costs and make the dairy industry more profitable; since in the dairy basins of Mexico, corn silage is commonly used in the feeding of dairy cattle, and it constitutes 30 to 40% of the dry ration in cows in production (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">González <italic>et al.,</italic> 2005</xref>).</p>
				<p>Among the forages that are most consumed and produced in the lagoon region, dairy region, is corn; being the second most important crop, after alfalfa (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">González-Salas <italic>etal.,</italic>2018</xref>). On the other hand, the constant growth of the number of head of cattle in the lagoon region, demands an increase in the production of forage maize and raises the need to identify materials with good forage characteristics, so among the selection criteria to identify hybrids adequate, it is the one that present high grain yield, productivity and high forage quality (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Sánchez <italic>et al.,</italic> 2011</xref>).</p>
				<p>On the other hand, forage maize production in Mexico has had little progress, since the seed industry has not made available to producers a wide diversity of forage maize varieties, which show greater productive potential to improve green forage yields to ensile. There are data that the area sown in Mexico for 2018 was 603,326 ha, with an average yield of 29 ton/ha of green forage; and for 2010 there was a planted area of 535,621 ha, with an average yield of 24 ton/ha of green forage (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">SIAP, 2020b</xref>); which shows that there has been an increase of 67,705 ha (12.6%), but the yield is still low, despite having had an increase of 5 ton/ha (20.8%). The cultivation of corn for silage in Mexico presents low yield of dry matter per hectare, low grain content and high fiber, which causes the digestibility and energy of the forage to be low. This situation is due in part to the use of hybrids considered as foragers, of high height and great capacity to produce forage, but with poor nutritional value; since in general these genotypes are sown at high population densities, which causes a low quantity of grain (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Núñez <italic>et al.,</italic> 2005</xref>). In addition, their training was not for forage maize (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Peña <italic>et al.,</italic> 2004</xref>).</p>
				<p>In the search to improve the yields and quality of forage maize, various studies have been carried out to evaluate various improved varieties and creoles from some regions, in order to provide alternatives to improve yields and offer corn genotypes that offer higher profitability and quality forage. Among them, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Zaragoza-Esparza <italic>etal.</italic> (2019)</xref> evaluated 12 genotypes in Valles Altos, and observed that the highest dry matter yields were for the Búho hybrids, 501 x 497, 504 x 408, Puma 1163, H-48, 501 x 555 and 501 x 410 with 26.4, 25.6, 25.5, 25.4, 24.7, 24.7 and 24.3 t ha<sup>-1</sup> of dry matter, respectively; and 74.0, 64.1, 68.8, 75.0, 69.4, 65.8 and 65.8 ton/ha of green forage, respectively.</p>
				<p>The plant height of the studied genotypes was variable, and higher for Puma 1167, Puma 1163, H-48, 504 x 408 and H-51 AE with 2.4, 2.3, 2.2, 2.2 and 2.2 m, respectively. This shows that there are alternative varieties on the market for producers who cannot access the varieties offered on the market by international companies. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Sánchez (2019)</xref> evaluated six commercial hybrids in a tropical region, and observed differences between genotypes and that the height varied from 203.1 to 167.2 cm. The number of leaves was from 10.7 to 9.6 leaves plant'<sup>1</sup>, the number of corn plant'<sup>1</sup> from 1.26 to 1.0, the stem diameter 5.7 to 4.8 cm, the weight of leaves plant'<sup>1</sup> was between 162.3 to 122.9 g; Stem weight was 130.8 to 81.4, forage yield from 38.8 to 30.7 ton ha<sup>-1</sup>. Likewise, population density influenced yield, since at a higher density of 83,333 plants ha<sup>-1</sup>, it showed the highest forage yield with 41.8 ton ha<sup>-1</sup>.</p>
				<p>Another study in trilinear maize evaluated in a dry tropical region by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic> (2018)</xref>, they observed variability in the studied parameters, and the best genotypes showed RMS from 32.8 to 27.6 t ha<sup>-1</sup>, for leaves from 5.7 to 5.0 t ha<sup>-1</sup>, for stem 19.1 to 13.6 t ha<sup>-1</sup>, for corn 8.9 at 8.51 ha<sup>-1</sup>; and the percentage of the morphological components was for leaves from 16 to 22%, corn 26 to 35% and stem 43 to 58%; aspects that will influence the total dry matter yield of the genotypes and their quality.</p>
				<p>So the objective of the present study was to estimate the dry matter yield, morphological components and some characters of the plants of 26 maize genotypes, originating from subtropical and tropical regions, under conditions of a dry climatic climate.</p>
			</sec>
			<sec sec-type="materials|methods">
				<title>MATERIAL AND METHODS</title>
				<sec>
					<title>Location</title>
					<p>The research was carried out at the Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí, located in the Ejido Palma de la Cruz, municipality of Soledad de Graciano Sánchez, SLP, at Km. 14.5 of the San Luis Potosí Highway. Matehuala, which is located at 22° 13' 39.8 ’’North Latitude and 100 ° 50' 58.3” West Longitude, at 1,835 m a.s.l The climate is dry temperate; with an annual average temperature of 17.1 °C. Rainfall is 362 mm (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Garcia, 2004</xref>).</p>
				</sec>
				<sec>
					<title>Genetic material and treatments</title>
					<p>23 genotypes of local maize, collected in subtropical and tropical regions of Mexico (Nayarit, Veracruz and Hidalgo), two local genotypes and an improved one from the semi-arid region under study were used to compare them; which functioned as treatments (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t4">table 1</xref>).</p>

					<title>Procedures</title>
					<p>An experiment was carried out with 26 corn genotypes, under irrigation conditions in the spring-summer cycle, to define their productivity, under the following scheme:</p>
					<p>The sowing was carried out in April. Plots of 5 rows 0.90 cm wide x 5 meters long were traced, and one seed was deposited per blow every 12 cm, at a depth of 7 cm manually (92,463 seeds/ha). The fertilization was carried out with a dose of 160-40-00 (N-P-K), applying all the phosphorus (P), and a third of the nitrogen (N) to the crop at sowing and the other two thirds of the N; one was applied one month and the other part two months after planting, respectively. Weed control was done with post-emergence herbicides (Gesaprin®) with a manual knapsack sprayer, 25 days after sowing (DAS), once the corn seedlings had emerged (12 to 15 cm); and a second 40 days later, with the same product and in the same way.</p>
					<p>The irrigation was by gravity, and it was applied on average every 21 days after the emergency, with an approximate sheet of 10 mm, and until when the corn was in the state of ½ of the milk line. 10 plants were marked for each plot in complete random competition, and identified with a label to measure the evaluated variables.</p>
					<p>The harvest was made at 120 to 135 DAS, depending on how the corn reached the ½ of the milk line of each respective genotype. For this, the marked plants were harvested at ground level, weighed with a 20 kg manual hanging scale (GAMO®), with an approximation of 0.5 kg. To then separate the components, stem + leaf and corn that were weighed individually, on a digital scale (TORREY® Model EQ-5/10), with a capacity of 5 kg and an approximation of 1 g. Each component was crushed and ground in a green forage mill with blades and hammers (NOGUERA®). A 200 g sample of the ground material was taken for each component, and they were deposited in brown paper bags, previously identified by genotype and repetition; which were taken to a forced air stove to dry them for 120 h at 55 °C. Once dry, they were weighed on an Ohaus brand digital scale, with a capacity of 300 g and an approximation of 0.1 g, and the percentage of DM was determined. The percentage of DM of each sample and of each component was multiplied to the green matter, calculated per hectare from the 10 plants sampled.</p>
				</sec>
				<sec>
					<title>Variables studied</title>
					<p>Often plants in complete competition harvested in green, once weighed and registered in the log, they separated into two components: corn and whole plant (stems+leaves); The corn and the whole plant were weighed in green on a TORREY® Brand scale, Model EQ-5/10, with a capacity of 5 kg and an approximation of 1 g. They were minced separately in a hammer forage crusher with blades, and a 200 g sample was taken and placed in a brown paper bag, which was taken to a forced air drying oven, to determine the DM; then it was weighed on a CS200 (Ohaus®) balance, with an approximation of 0.1 g, in such a way that two component variables were obtained:</p>
					<p>Yield of dry matter of complete plant (stem+leaf) (YDMP).</p>
					<p>Corn dry matter yield (YDMC).</p>
					<p>Yield of dry matter (YDM), was obtained by adding the two components plant and corn. Corn: complete plant (RCCP) ratio. It was obtained dividing the yield of the DM of the corn, by the yield of the DM of the complete plant (Corn, Stem + Leaves).</p>
					<p>Plant: complete plant ratio (RPCP). The yield of the stem+leaf DM was divided by the yield of the whole plant.</p>
					<p>Number of leaves per plant (NLEAVES). The number of leaves for each plant was counted, data that was recorded individually for the 10 plants with complete competition taken at random, from the experimental unit.</p>
					<p>Number of corn per plant (NCORNS). The number of corn on the 10 randomly selected plants was counted.</p>
					<p>Plant height (PH). It was measured with a tape measure, from the base of the stem to the insertion base of the leaf blade with the sheath of the last leaf, in the 10 randomly selected plants</p>
					<p>Stem diameter (SD). The ten randomly selected plants were measured in the lower internode with a manual vernier.</p>
				</sec>
				<sec>
					<title>Experimental design</title>
					<p>The experimental design was completely randomized, with six repetitions for RMS and 10 repetitions for NLEAVES, NCORNS, PH and SD; where the experimental plot was 5 furrows 0.90 m wide and 5 m long.</p>
					<p>The data obtained was analyzed using the <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">SAS® Version 9.3</xref> statistical package and the Tukey test P &lt;0.05 was performed for the comparison of means (SAS, 2011).</p>
				</sec>
			</sec>
			<sec sec-type="results|discussion">
				<title>RESULTS AND DISCUSSION</title>
				<sec>
					<title>Plant dry matter yield</title>
					<p>YDMP showed significance (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t5">Table 2</xref>), where OjitalCT and Tampiqueñol showed the highest values with 17.8 and 17.0 t DMP ha<sup>-1</sup>, followed by the TlanchiHgo2, PapantlalntrJala, TlanchiHgoA7 and AS948-2 genotypes with 15.7, 14.6, 14.6 and 14.0 t DMP ha<sup>-1</sup>, respectively. The genotype with the lowest value was TlanchiHgoA3 with 3.4 t DMP ha<sup>-1</sup>. Values higher than those of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Elizondo y Boschini (2002)</xref>, in Creole maize and improved in a mountainous humid forest, with values of 11.3 and 7.41TLDM (DMP) ha<sup>-1</sup>, respectively. For leaf from 5.7 to 5.0 t ha<sup>-1</sup> and for stem 19.1 to 13.6 t ha<sup>-1</sup>. Values lower than those observed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic> (2018)</xref>, in maize evaluated in dry tropics for leaf of 24.8 to 18.6 t ha<sup>-1</sup> of stem+leaves (DMP). Similar to those obtained by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Elizondo-Salazar (2011)</xref>, with 7.8 and 13.8 t of stem+leaves (DMP) ha<sup>-1</sup> for improved and native corn, respectively.</p>

					<title>Corn dry matter yield</title>
					<p>YDMC showed significant differences (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t5">Table 2</xref>), where the genotypes with the highest values were TlanchiHgoA2, with 12.7 t DMC ha<sup>-1</sup> and FeliUzeta followed, with 9.0 t DMC ha<sup>-1</sup>. The genotype with the lowest value was FcolMaJala with 1.2 t DMC ha<sup>-1</sup>. Values similar to those obtained by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic> (2018)</xref> in trilinear hybrids evaluated in dry tropics from 8.9 to 8.5 t DMC ha<sup>-1</sup>, and lower than those obtained by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Elizondo y Boschini (2002)</xref>in native and improved maize in a humid mountainous forest, with values of 10.7 and 15.3 t DMC ha<sup>-1</sup>, respectively; and those of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Elizondo-Salazar (2011)</xref>, with 3.1 and 1.51 of DMC ha<sup>-1</sup> for improved and native corn, respectively. This demonstrates the high productivity of tropical, semi-tropical and temperate maize, compared to mountain maize. In addition to observing variability of this component between genotypes, this character may well be used for future improvement.</p>
				</sec>
				<sec>
					<title>Dry matter yield</title>
					<p>The YDM was significant between genotypes (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t5">Table 2</xref>), where the highest value was obtained by the TlanchiHgoA2 genotype, with 28.6 t DM ha<sup>-1</sup>; which was followed by the OjitalCT genotype, with 25.5 t of DM ha<sup>-1</sup>. The lowest value was shown by the TlanchiHgoA3 genotype, with 8.1 t DM ha<sup>-1</sup>. These results are similar to those observed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Zaragoza-Esparza <italic>et at</italic> (2019)</xref> from 26.4 to 24.3 t ha<sup>-1</sup> in hybrid corn. Data less than those of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Parra (1996)</xref> for 23 genotypes of Creole corn and two commercial varieties, with a range of 18.13 to 33.9 t DM ha<sup>-1</sup> for 1991; to those of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Rivas <italic>et at</italic> (2011)</xref> for trilinear maize, evaluated in Valles Altos with 47.2 to 34.3 t DM ha<sup>-1</sup>, and those of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic>(2018)</xref> for trilinear maize evaluated in the subtropical region, with results of 32.8 to 27.6 t DM ha<sup>-1</sup>. It was lower than those obtained in 1992 in a range of 54.1 to 231 DM ha<sup>-1</sup> with a density of 62 thousand plants ha<sup>-1</sup>, and higher than those observed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Sánchez <italic>et at</italic>(2011)</xref>, for Creole corn, which showed the highest yield with 44.2 t of green matter ha<sup>-1</sup>; that if it considers a dry matter percentage of 35% by the state in which it was harvested. It would have a yield of 15.51 DM ha<sup>-1</sup> under hot humid conditions, and those of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Elizondo y Boschini (2002)</xref> in creole maize with values of 11.61 DM ha<sup>-1</sup>.</p>
				</sec>
				<sec>
					<title>Plant Ratio: Complete Plant</title>
					<p>The RPCP showed significant differences (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t5">Table 2</xref>), where the highest value was obtained by the FcolMaJal genotype, with 0.91; which was followed by PapIntrJalaAmc, with 0.80 and PapantlalntrJala, Tampiqueñol and Tampiqueño2, with 0.76 for all three. On the other hand, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>et at</italic> (2018)</xref> observed leaf values of 0.16 to 0.22 and stem values of 0.43 to 0.58, which adding together the two components would give 0.59 to 0.80 of RPCP, a little less than what was observed in this investigation. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Rivas <italic>et at</italic> (2011)</xref> observed other values for trilinear maize, evaluated in Valles Altos with 0.77 to 0.55.</p>
				</sec>
				<sec>
					<title>Corn: Complete Plant Ratio</title>
					<p>The RCCP showed statistical difference between genotypes (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t5">Table 2</xref>), where TlanchiHgoA3 showed the highest value with 0.61; followed by the Forrasierra genotype, with 0.53; while the lowest value was obtained by FcolMaJal, with 0.10. Data greater than those observed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Rivas <italic>et at</italic> (2011)</xref> with values for trilinear maize evaluated in Valles Altos, with 0.45 to 0.23, and those of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>et at</italic> (2018)</xref> with corn 0.26 to 0.35. This character is important to select in forage maize, because a proportion greater than 54% of corn can ensure an <italic>in vitro</italic> digestibility (IVD) greater than 68% (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Peña <italic>et at,</italic> 2004</xref>) and showed less than 50% of FDN, for presenting a satisfactory energy value (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Núñez <italic>et at,</italic>2003</xref>).</p>
				</sec>
				<sec>
					<title>Height</title>
					<p>For height, the results showed significant differences between genotypes (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t6">Table 3</xref>), where Tampiqueñol showed the highest value with 241.8 cm, and the genotype, PapantlalntrJala2 followed with 231.9 cm. On the other hand, the commercial hybrid Forrasierra showed the lowest value with 135.8 cm. The data showed great variability in plant height. These results are similar to those found by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Parra (1996)</xref>, who observed a height range of 245 to 169 cm for 23 creole corn genotypes, in 1991, and 239 to 175 cm. in 1992; like those observed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Sánchez <italic>et</italic> (2011)</xref>, for Creole corn with 244 and 216 cm of height, from a warm humid region; also to those of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Sánchez <italic>et at.</italic> (2013)</xref>, who obtained heights of 247 and 216 cm fora creole and 195 to 165 cm in commercial hybrids, in a humid tropical region in two experiments. This height is similar since the Creoles that showed a greater height in this investigation come from warm and semi-warm regions; like those observed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Zaragoza-Esparza <italic>et</italic> (2019)</xref>, with values of 2.4, 2.3, 2.2, 2.2 and 2.2 m for the largest maize in Valles Altos. Greater than those observed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Sánchez<italic>et at.</italic> (2019)</xref>, for tropical maize, with values of 203.1 to 167.2 cm. Less than observed<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Rivas <italic>et at.</italic> (2011)</xref>, who obtained values for trilinear maize evaluated in Valles Altos from 284 to 201 cm; and those of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>etal.</italic> (2018)</xref>, in maize evaluated in the dry tropics, with a range of 264 to 195 cm; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Yescas <italic>et at.</italic> (2015)</xref>, with values ranging from 257 to 282 cm;<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Borroel <italic>etal.</italic> (2014)</xref>, with 243 to 221 cm; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Montemayor <italic>etal.</italic> (2006)</xref> with a range of 172 to 156 cm and <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic> (2006)</xref> from 255 to 159 cm.</p>

					<title>Stem diameter</title>
					<p>The stem Diameter showed statistical significance (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t6">Table 3</xref>), where the RazaJala genotype showed the highest value with 2.96 cm, followed by AS948-2 with 2.87 cm; while the commercial hybrid Forrasierra showed the lowest value with 2.14 cm. Thus, a great variability was observed between genotypes for SD, being a character that can be used for selection and genetic improvement. Data greater than those observed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Parra (1996)</xref>for 23 creole corn genotypes, in a range of 2.01 to 1.28 cm in 1991 and from 1.93 to 1.36 cm in 1992; and similar to those observed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Rivas (2011)</xref> for trilinear maize evaluated in Valles Altos with 2.71 to 2.30 cm.</p>
				</sec>
				<sec>
					<title>Number of leaves</title>
					<p>NLEAVES showed significant differences (<xref ref-type="table" rid="t5">Table 2</xref>), where the genotype with the highest value was RazaJala with 19.0 leaves of plant'<sup>1</sup>, followed by BVPbaja with 18.0 leaves of plant'<sup>1</sup>; while the commercial hybrid Forrasierra presented the lowest value with 12.4 leaves of plant'<sup>1</sup>. Values similar to those of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Rivas <italic>etal.</italic> (2018)</xref> with 17.0 to 14.2 in trilinear maize evaluated in the dry tropics. Data greater than those obtained by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Parra (1996)</xref> in 21 creoles, obtaining a range of 16.4 to 14.5 leaves per plant, and many greater than those of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Sánchez <italic>et al.</italic> (2019)</xref> with values of 10.7 to 9.6 leaves plant'<sup>1</sup>, and similar to those of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Rivas <italic>et al.</italic> (2011)</xref> trilinear maize evaluated in Valles Altos with 14.9 to 12.5. This character is important to select in corn because it is one of the components that give the genotypes greater nutritional value, as it is more digestible (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Paliwal, 2001</xref>).</p>
				</sec>
			</sec>
			<sec sec-type="conclusions">
				<title>CONCLUSIONS</title>
				<p>Regarding the number of leaves, the RazaJala, BVPbaja and AS948-2 genotypes with values ranging from 19 to 17.8 leaves, showed the highest values, which makes them recommendable to select or recommend them for this considerable range. As for total dry matter yield, the best genotypes were TlanchiFlgoA2 and OjitalCT, demonstrating productive characteristics that can be taken into account for dry matter production. For the dry matter yield of the plant (stem+leaf), OjitalCT and Tampiqueñol showed the highest value, which makes these genotypes viable for dry matter production in stem and leaf; also for good performance. According to the evaluation, it was observed that there are genotypes from the subtropical and tropical regions, which show satisfactory and better productive behavior than other local and improved hybrids in semi-arid regions, such as Tampiqueñol, OjitalCT and TlanchiFlgoA2; therefore, they could be recommended to be evaluated more broadly at the commercial level to be used as forage corn alternatives, or to be considered in breeding programs for forage purposes.</p>
